A study from Australia shows that surgery to treat belching and burning in the chest and stomach has a very high failure rate.

Belching and burning in the stomach are caused by cancer, a stomach infection or reflux of food and stomach contents up the esophagus. Those who have belching and burning should have an upper GI series X ray to rule out a tumor. They should also have a blood test for Helicobacter, the most common cause of a stomach infection. Then they should be given the standard two antibiotics and one ulcer medicine for one week because doctors have identified at last 21 different germs that cause belching and burning in the stomach. Only if they continue to have symptoms should they consider the diagnosis of Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), because the only effective cure, surgery, has a high failure rate.
