A study from Taiwan shows that the side effects of diabetes are caused more by how high the blood sugar rises after meals, than by how long blood sugar levels remain elevated above normal.

Diabetes causes heart attacks, strokes, blindness, deafness, burning foot syndrome, kidney failure, impotence and many other problems. In this study, doctors compared fasting and two-hour blood sugar levels. The people who had the highest rise in blood sugar after meals had far more side effects of diabetes than those whose blood sugar levels did not rise as high after meals, but had higher fasting blood sugar levels. When you eat, your blood sugar level rises. The higher it rises, the more sugar sticks to cells. Once sugar is stuck on a cell, it cannot get off. It is converted to a poison called sorbitol that destroys that cell. This is what causes the nerve damage that occurs when diabetes is not controlled. See report #D222.
