so which is better..or do both?....and do you do the gradual reps...4-5 6 etc
until it hurts or what? My buddy says for muscles...only need three times with heaviest weight then come back week later and do it again |

Depends on the type of muscle you wish to use - the red fibre or the white.
If you want to have a lot of stamina (red fibre - type one muscle) do plenty of reps.
If you want explosive strength and power (white fibre - type two muscle) do a few with really heavy weights. This will make your muscle grow really big.
Athletes tend to decide what they want to achieve and then do the appropriate training.
The rest of us just bounce weights around in the gym ! Edited by Fred's Fitness - 30 Aug 2009 at 11:50pm |

Hello:
3-4 reps for building muscle. 7-8 reps for building strength, without building more muscle more than 12 reps for endurance. These are general guidelines. There are many sites dedicated to this topic. Look around the crossfit site. They have some great exercises and (f I remember) articles or links to articles related to your question and more. Good Luck |

Oh no. Not for men only. Anyone can work out like this.
If you exercise using bodyweight only then these types of exercise make everything a level playing field.
So, they are good for men, women -- and especially suitable for children.
