![]() Topic: 16 year old son's very rapid heartbeatPosted: 06 Sep 2006 at 4:08pm |

About a year ago we took my 16 yr old son to the emerg with an extremely fast heartbeat. He had been fencing, but had rested for about 30 minutes before his heartbeat started to runaway.
They did several tests, and the attending physician said it was likely stress related. It had been a busy time for him with schoolwork etc.
It's happened a couple of times only since, once when we started to work out at the gym, and another time while he was resting. He and I walked around the gym for about a half hour until it started to settle (he didn't want to sit in one spot), then we went home.
It's really frightening for us as his parents, I'd put my hand on his chest and believe me it was flying.
Any thoughts?

I'm 29 and have experienced the same symtpoms. I could be sitting there reading a book and my heart starts pounding, thumping almost and the heart rate is through the roof. It literally takes my breath away and makes me lightheaded. I have to ride it out for a few minutes and then I'm fine. It doesn't happen often, but it's scary enough to warrant concern. I work out and eat right and am within my weight range for my height/age. My doctor thinks it's stress related as well, but frankly, I'm tired of that 'diagnosis'. I'd love to hear if anyone has any other ideas other than stress before I drop dead of a heart attack and an autopsy reveals something else. I tend to have low blood pressure if that helps???? |

Is he on any medication? Is his heart skipping beats too? I think there's a heart monitor thing (maybe an EKG) that he can wear strapped to his chest for a few days that can measure his heart rate and rhythm.

I also wonder if allergies or maybe infection ie. bacterial infection or viral, could cause increased heart beat speed?
