lzbieta Kurowska of the University of Western Ontario in London, reports that three glasses of orange juice a day raises the good HDL cholesterol that helps prevents heart attacks (1).

Song-Hae Bok of the Korean Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology in Taejon also reports that tangerines lower cholesterol significantly (2). That doesn't mean that everyone should drink three glasses of orange juice a day because juices contain lots of sugar that can raise blood sugar levels in people susceptible to diabetes. You will get the same benefit, plus fiber, by eating whole oranges and tangerines. Citrus juices contains flavonoids, called hesperetin and naringenin, that block liver synthesis of cholesterol. The highest concentrations of these flavonoids are in the peel which most people do not eat, so there's a rush to patent flavonoids that help lower cholesterol. These studies should encourage you to eat a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and beans every day.
