A study from Japan has shown that refined carbohydrates in bakery products, pastas and sugar-added foods can cause heart attacks, even in people who are not diabetic.
When a diabetic eat foods, his blood sugar levels rise too high, causing sugar to stick on the surface of cells and be converted to sorbitol, a poison that destroys that cells. Sugar stuck of cells blocks arteries to cause heart attacks. Diabetics are people whose blood sugar levels rise too high after meals. This study shows that even non-diabetics who eat too much refined carbohydrates, have high levels of sugar stuck on cells, called advanced glycation end products, also known as AGEs; and non-diabetics who have blocked arteries also have the highest levels of AGEs. If more studies support this one, people at high risk for heart attacks should cut back on eating refined carbohydrates in bakery products, pastas and sugar-added foods.
