A TEST FOR INFERTILITY IN MEN

A study from Nigeria shows that men who have bacteria in their semen are the ones least likely to be able to father a child. The most common known cause of infertility for both men and women is infection. The authors asked men to produce a semen sample and cultured them for several different germs that can infect humans. Those whose semen grew out harmful germs were the ones least able to father children.

Many infertility specialists charge more than five thousand dollars to evaluate an infertile couple and more than $30,000 to treat them. They do not look seriously for an infection and they do not prescribe antibiotics. On the basis of this well-done study and others, semen cultures should be a part of every infertility workup, because antibiotics for infections are the least expensive and most effective way to help infertile couples have a child.
