How Sprouted Grains Help to Prevent IBS

A report from Nagahama, Japan shows that sprouted wheat may help treat irritable bowel syndrome. Irritable bowel syndrome occurs when a person has terrible gas and cramping caused by hard stool. Eating lots of foods that have had the fiber removed such as bakery products and pastas can cause rock hard stools that cause constipation and block the passage of gas, blowing up the colon and causing cramping pains. Eventually enough gas forms to blow out the stool, followed by a short course of diarrhea and the process repeats.

Eating whole grains such as barley, wheat berries and wild rice, provides fiber to treat this condition, but this study shows that sprouted whole grains produce much more fecal short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) that help protect the intestinal linings from infection and hastens healing. Whole grains are seeds of grass. Placing them in water allows them to sprout, grow roots and make more short-chain fatty acids.
