Whipple's Disease

I am appalled when doctors do not look for infection in people who suffer from joint pains, loss of feeling or tingling, loss of muscle control, crazy behavior, weight loss and diarrhea.

I am always shocked when doctors do not look for infection in people who suffer from joint pains, loss of feeling or tingling, loss of muscle control, crazy behavior, weight loss and/or diarrhea.

Whipple's disease is characterized by terrible diarrhea, weight loss from not being able to absorb foods, and horrible muscle and joint pain with damage to the joints themselves. Fever and enlarged lymph nodes are also signs of this disease. The patient may also have nerve damage such as loss of feeling, crazy behavior, tingling or loss of muscle control. Heart damage is common. The study referenced below shows that the arteries of the heart in people with Whipple's disease are loaded with bacteria. It is a shame not to make the correct diagnosis as these people can be cured completely just by taking antibiotics for many months.

The current treatment is to take an injection of 2.4 million units of long-acting penicillin called Bicillin, and then take doxycycline 100 mg twice a day for at least a year.
