Wilson's Syndrome

According to Dr. Steve Barrett, publisher and webmaster of quackwatch.org , investigators from the State of Georgia are trying to determine whether thyroid medications caused three patients in metropolitan Atlanta to be hospitalized (1). They were given T3 (a thyroid hormone) prescribed for "Wilson's syndrome", a disease invented by E. Denis Wilson, a Florida physician who claimed to have discovered a type of abnormally low thyroid function in which routine blood tests of thyroid are often normal. Wilson claimed that the condition could cause more than 70 symptoms that are treatable with a thyroid hormone called T3.

In 1992, the Florida Board of Medicine fined Wilson $10,000, suspended his license for six months, and ordered him to undergo psychological testing because the board felt that a patient died from thyroid overdosage. Although he does not appear to have resumed practice, his ideas are still promoted by the Wilson's Syndrome Foundation. The American Thyroid Association issued a position statement claiming, in effect, that Wilson's theories are nonsense (2).

Dr. Wilson feels that people who have the symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, multiple chemical sensitivities suffer from low blood levels of a thyroid hormone called T3. He feels that these people have low body temperatures , Fatigue , Heat/cold intolerance , low blood pressure, depression, and so forth. However, taking unnecessary thyroid hormone can harm you.

*it causes calcium to come out of bones, so that they are so weak that the slightest pressure can cause them to break.
*it causes irregular heart beats, so the heart can stop pumping blood through the body.
*it can cause strokes.

You should never take thyroid hormones unless a blood test called TSH shows that you need it, because overdoses of thyroid hormone can cause heart attacks, strokes and osteoporosis.
