SLEEP APNEA AND CARBOHYDRATE INTOLERANCE

Reports from Johns Hopkins and China show that most people with sleep apnea are obese and are at high risk for heart attacks and diabetes. Sleep apnea means that a person stops breathing during sleep more often than normal people do. It is associated with increased risk for heart attacks and strokes. Most people with this condition are markedly overweight.

These papers show that most people with sleep apnea also suffer from insulin insensitivity. Their blood sugar levels rise very high after they eat meals with refined carbohydrates consisting of sugar-added foods and those made from flour. These people also have very high levels of insulin and are at high risk for developing diabetes. If your spouse tells you that you stop breathing at night, check with your doctor to see if you are diabetic and therefore should restrict bakery products, pasta and sugar-added foods.
