Chewable Antacids are Better

Investigators from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center reported that chewing antacids is more effective for control of esophageal acidity than swallowing antacid tablets.

Researchers caused heartburn by feeding people a meal of chili, cheese, raw onions and cola. One hour later, the people took either chewable calcium carbonate tablets, swallowable calcium carbonate tablets, effervescent bicarbonate solution or placebo. The chewable tablets and effervescent bicarbonate were far more effective in preventing heartburn than the swallowed tablets. Evidently when you swallow an antacid, it passes through the stomach too fast to neutralize the acid. When you chew the antacid or dissolve it in a glass, the antacid is ready to work as soon as it reaches your stomach.
