World Health Organization Says Air Pollution Causes Cancer

The World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer says “air pollution is a now officially a carcinogen. The more people expose themselves to fine particles and other pollutants in the air, the higher their risk of developing lung and bladder cancers.” Air pollution caused about 223,000 deaths from lung cancer globally in 2010 and also increases heart attack risk. The WHO ranks air pollution with more than 100 other known cancer-causing substances including asbestos, plutonium, silica dust, ultraviolet radiation, tobacco smoke and even outdoor dusts. The main sources of pollution are transportation, industrial and agricultural emissions, power plants, and residential heating, air conditioning and cooking.
