If you store fat primarily in your belly, you are at high risk for diabetes, heart attacks and obesity.

Blood sugar rises after you eat, causing your pancreas to release insulin. Insulin keeps blood sugar levels form rising too high, but it is harmful because it constricts arteries to cause heart attacks and makes you fat by causing your brain to feel hunger and your liver to make fat. After insulin drives sugar into cells, it is grabbed by your liver and removed from your circulation.

People who store fat primarily around their waistline also store fat inside their bellies and livers, preventing the liver from removing insulin, which increases insulin levels and susceptibility to heart attacks, diabetes and obesity. If you are shaped like an apple, get tests to check for diabetes and try to lower insulin levels by avoiding a high rise in blood sugar. Restrict refined carbohydrates in bakery products, pastas, sugar added foods and fruit juices, and eat root vegetables and fruits only with meals. See report #1555.
