IT'S MISLEADING TO LET A SINGLE FOOD CLAIM THAT IT PREVENTS DISEASE

The announcement that The Food and Drug Administration will allow soybean manufacturers to advertise that soybeans help prevent heart attacks is particularly disturbing because it may encourage some people to eat such huge amounts of soybean productss that they could cause harm.

All plants contain chemicals that maintain health and some that harm you. Fortunately the foods that your ancestors taught you to eat have more healthful chemicals and you are not harmed when you eat reasonable amounts. Soybeans contain genistein that may help prevent heart attacks, but they also contain hemagglutinins that cause clots, antitrypsins that cause pancreatic cancer in animals, goitrogens that cause thyroid disease and phytates that prevent the absorption of minerals. Allowing soybean manufacturers to claim that soybeans help prevent heart atacks could encourage some people to eat soybeans three times a day and increase their risks for clots, pancreatic cancers, thyroid disease and perhaps breast cancer See report #8424.
