Skin Cream Ingredients That Can Age Skin

The European Commission of the European Union has proposed tough new restriction of many skin creams containing alphahydroxy acids that are advertised to prevent wrinkling.

Manufacturers of alphahydroxy acids claim that they rejuvenate skin by peeling off the outer layers to reveal the fresher skin underneath. They claim that fruity acids smooth fine lines and surface wrinkles on the face and that they improve skin tone, which is ridiculous because toning refers to muscles and the skin contains no muscles.

Research from the Food and Drug Administration of the United States show that alphahydroxy acids increase the number of skin cells that are damaged, stimulate reddening, blistering and burning, and increase risk for ultraviolet ray damage from the sun. People at highest risk for wrinkling are those who have dry sensitive skin and those who expose their skin to excessive amounts of sunlight.

Alphahydroxy acids are listed under names such as glycolic acid; malic acid; citric acid; glycolic acid and ammonium glyconate; alphahydroxyoctanic acid; alphahydroxy caprilic acid; hydroxycaprilic acid; mixed fruit acid; tri-alpha hydroxy fruit acids; triple fruit acid; sugar cane extract; alphahydroxy and botanical complex; L-alpha hydroxy acid; glycomer, and crosslinked fatty acids alpha nutrition (three AHAs)DT.
