The countries that have the most osteoporosis are the ones in which its people eat the most meat and dairy products. Countries that rarely eat diary products, a rich source of calcium, rarely suffer osteoporosis. Deborah Sellmeyer, an endocrinologist at the University of California-San Francisco, found that women who eat the most acidifying foods are the ones most likely to suffer osteoporosis.
When you take in more protein than you need, the body has no way to store extra protein. Since it can't use protein immediately, your liver takes protein building blocks, called amino acids, and converts them to products that can be used for energy or to be converted to fats, called organic acids, which make the blood acidic. Your kidneys respond by pulling calcium from bones to neutralize your blood. The most acidifying foods are cheese, egg yolks, meat and milk and other rich sources of protein.
Writers from Time magazine called Dr. Richard Heaney of the University of Cincinnati, one of the leading proponents for dairy products to prevent osteoporosis. He has published more research than anyone else showing that calcium prevents osteoporosis. He responded to this latest study by saying that "It's too early to be sure that a diet rich in meat and cheese is bad for bones." Dr. Heaney's research is heavily supported by the Dairy industry. I recommend a diet that is low in meat, chicken, diary products, eggs and other protein-rich foods that acidify the blood, and high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans and other seeds. A plant based diet helps to prevent osteoporosis as well as heart attacks, certain cancers, strokes, high blood pressure, diabetes and many other diseases.
