An issue of Best Practice & Research in Clinical Rheumatology, has many articles on chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia.

A person complains of many months of severe fatigue, muscle aches, headaches, diarrhea, depression and other symptoms. The doctor orders test for every imaginable known cause and they all come back normal. Instead of telling the truth that he doesn't have the foggiest idea of the cause, he calls it chronic fatigue syndrome, giving the patient the impression that she has a specific disease. Chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia are labels that contain many different causes that current medicine cannot diagnose. About 20 percent will improve with long term antibiotics, such as doxycycline or clarithromycin, but many will never recover. See report #G115.

MO Makela. Is fibromyalgia a distinct clinical entity? The epidemiologist's evidence. Best Practice & Research in Clinical Rheumatology, 1999, Vol 13, Iss 3, pp 415-419.
