A study in this month's Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics shows that children who eat meals watching television eat more food, are fatter and spend more time watching television.

Several other studies show that eating while watching televison increases television watching. This study shows that each meal eaten in front of the television set adds 38 to 73 minutes to the time spent watching. One hundred sixty-nine families from California were studied when the children were six years old and again six years later. Television watching time increased, as did the number of TVs in the home, the presence of VCRs, TVs in children's bedrooms, and television eating time. As you would expect, children who watched more than two hours a day weighed more than children who watched less.
